The Russian PGM Mining Industry in the Taimyr Peninsula

Norilsk

Norlisk

Chernogorskoye

Russian Platinum is currently exploring disseminated deposits at Chernogorskoye, close to Norilsk-Talnakh. This deposit could be mined via an open pit.

Maslovskoye deposit

This is one of Norilsk Nickel's most promising development projects. It lies on an extension of the Norilsk-1 deposit and is said to have massive ores. The deposit is 15 km from Norilsk, but it is in a mountainous region with no local infrastructure (power supplies or roads). A new 1 km vertical shaft on the site is being considered as well as a 10 km horizontal shaft from the existing Zapolyarny underground mine. Development of the deposit will require large investment.

Nadezhda metallurgical plant

The Nadezhda metallurgical plant processes nickel and pyrrhotite concentrates produced by the
Talnakh and Norilsk concentrators, copper concentrate from the Nickel plant, and some old stockpiled pyrrhotite concentrate to produce high-grade matte, copper anodes and elemental sulphur.

Norilsk-1 ore body

Previously contained massive ores. Now mainly disseminated ore.

Medvezhy Ruchey open pit

This open pit exploits the Norilsk-1 deposit. Disseminated ore is increasingly being mined in the 450 m deep open pit now that massive (vein) ore has been depleted.

Zapolyarny mine

This underground mine exploits the Norilsk-1 deposit. Increased disseminated ore production has recently been reported for this mine.

Nickel plant

The Nickel Plant processes nickel concentrate plus stockpiled pyrrhotite concentrate and old tailings.

Norilsk concentrator

The Norilsk concentrator processes disseminated ore from the Norilsk-1 deposit, plus cuprous ore from the Oktyabrsky and Talnakh deposits, as well as old tailings to produce nickel and copper concentrates.

PGM concentrator

This plant processes slimes from copper and nickel electrolysis to produce pgm concentrate. The resulting concentrate is sent for refining at Krasnoyarsk.

Copper plant

The Copper plant processes copper concentrates produced by the Norilsk and Talnakh concentrators and copper anodes from the Nadezhda metallurgical plant to produce copper, elemental sulphur and sulphuric acid.

Talnakh concentrator

The massive and cuprous ores mined at the Oktyabrsky and Talnakh deposits are enriched here to produce nickel, copper and pyrrhotite concentrates.

Mayak mine

This underground mine, like several others, has recently been exploiting more disseminated ore to compensate for reduced output of massive ore.

Skalisty mine

This underground mine exploits the Talnakh and Oktyabrsky deposits.

Komsomolsky mine

This underground mine exploits the Talnakh deposit and also part of the Oktyabrsky deposit.

Talnakh deposit

Contains massive, cuprous and disseminated ores.

Oktyabrsky mine

This underground mine exploits massive, cuprous and disseminated ores. Exploration on the flanks and deep horizons of the Talnakh ore field have recently been carried out from this mine.

Taimyrsky mine

Produces mainly massive ore.

Oktyabrsky deposit

Contains, massive, cuprous and disseminated ores.
